Send a message that you are interested
in hearing about the person's problem(s)
Offer the person hope that measures can
be taken to help
Let people know you are available if
they need anything
Be cautious about giving advice, don’t rush to fix problems
Avoid making
judgments or placing blame
Be aware that
communications given to you by someone in distress may have to be revealed in
certain circumstances--you cannot guarantee confidentiality (For example, if the
person says they are suicidal)

Talk with peers;
learn about who they are and what is important in their life
Inquire about
current problems or needs
Know resources
or sources of support that are available
Safety is
paramount--if the person talks about suicide/violence be sure to inform unit
leadership for help
