Natural Helpers-- Peer Support

I.  Overview

 General Principles of Peer Support

Agencies, unit leaders and community members all share responsibility for the general welfare of the community and its members.  Peers provide a natural source of support that is important to a healthy community.  Peer support includes a wide range of activities from simply being there and listening to a colleague, to more active planning and intervention aimed at helping the person in need address his or her problem.

Peer Support as a Protective Factor

Peer support is essential for minimizing social isolation and preventing distress.  A significant number of  members have little involvement in their communities and find themselves isolated.

 Peer Support Compliments Leadership Support

Peers can play a crucial role in providing support and encouraging use of helping agencies.  For example, unit members may be more comfortable talking to peers and may be more willing to seek help when recommended by a friend.  This naturally occurring process can be enhanced by leaders who encourage a supportive environment and use of helping agencies.  Leaders can encourage active involvement in unit social events and other  community activities.  Wellness presentations at commander's calls by health care professionals and other helping agencies can increase individual awareness of how to access services for assistance.
