  Being there
Take time to listen
Send a message that you are interested in hearing about the person's problem(s)
Offer the person hope that measures can be taken to help
Let people know you are available if they need anything
Be cautious about giving advice, don’t rush to fix problems
Avoid making judgments or placing blame
Be aware that communications given to you by someone in distress may have to be revealed in certain circumstances--you cannot guarantee confidentiality (For example, if the person says they are suicidal)

  Awareness of needs
Talk with peers; learn about who they are and what is important in their life
Inquire about current problems or needs
Know resources or sources of support that are available
Safety is paramount--if the person talks about suicide/violence be sure to inform unit leadership for help

  Shared planning
Encourage healthy coping responses such as leisure activities
Discourage unhealthy coping such as alcohol use
Talk to the person about things that could be done now to help alleviate the problem(s)
Help coordinate a plan for action
Discuss option for supportive action
Ask the person who else they would like to involve in the planning process
When appropriate keep supervisors informed of safety concerns

  Initiation of the plan
Help prioritize steps to solve the problem
Help them take the first step toward initiating the plan
Assist in getting basic material necessities
Help locate resources and supportive agencies
Provide transportation

  Continuing support
Follow-up after the immediate problem is resolved
Inquire if the situation has been improving
Inquire if there is anything else that you can do
